The Life I Thought Would Last Forever

“Good morning ❤️“

They were the last words she ever sent me.

Later that same day, I learned that she had passed away peacefully in her sleep. Deep in my heart, I have always believed she wanted those final words to be for me. I cannot prove it. But it is what my heart has always believed.

For most people, those are just two ordinary words. For me, they became a memory I will carry for the rest of my life. To understand why, I have to go back many years.

For seventeen years, I lived what I believed would be my forever life. I was married, raising two wonderful children, and convinced that my future had already been written. Then everything changed. My marriage ended, and with it disappeared the life I thought I would have forever. Divorce doesn’t only end a relationship. Sometimes it makes you question who you are.

For a long time, I struggled to imagine what my future would look like. Eventually, I realised that I had two choices. I could remain trapped by the life I had lost… or find the courage to begin again.

So I did.

A New Beginning

Starting over wasn’t easy.

After my divorce, I left Romania and moved to Italy, hoping that a new country and a new career would help me rebuild my life. Working as a chef gave me purpose again. It kept my hands busy and my mind focused, but it couldn’t erase the loneliness that often waited for me when the day was over.

I wasn’t looking for another relationship. In fact, I wasn’t sure I believed in love anymore. Then, one ordinary evening, while browsing social media, I came across the profile of a Thai woman. Something about her caught my attention. As I looked through her photos, one image stood out. She was standing with her back to the camera, revealing a beautiful tattoo that immediately made me curious about the story behind it. For a moment, I smiled to myself.

“Why would someone like her ever notice me?”

I almost closed the page and carried on with my evening. Instead, a quiet voice inside me whispered, “Just send the message.”

So I did. I had no expectations. I wasn’t searching for a miracle. I was simply saying hello to someone on the other side of the world.

A little while later, she replied.

Thailand Through Her Eyes

What began as a simple conversation soon became something much deeper. Day after day, we shared our lives, our dreams, and the little moments that make two strangers slowly become part of each other’s world. Before long, I travelled to Thailand to meet her in person. I was excited, but also nervous.

Meeting someone you’ve only spoken to online always involves a leap of faith. The moment we met, that uncertainty disappeared.

She was exactly the person I had come to know through our conversations—kind, genuine, and effortlessly caring. As our relationship grew, she introduced me to a side of Thailand that most visitors never experience. We explored local markets, shared simple meals in family-owned restaurants, visited beautiful temples, and spent time with the people who mattered most to her. She also introduced me to her family, who welcomed me with warmth and kindness from the very beginning.

I wasn’t just discovering a new country. I was discovering it through her eyes. She didn’t simply show me where she lived. She showed me why she loved it.

Without realising it, I fell in love with Thailand too. Not because of its beaches or famous destinations. But because every place held a memory, every smile felt genuine, and every day reminded me that happiness is often found in life’s simplest moments.

Looking back, I realise she gave me two unforgettable gifts. She showed me what One True Love truly feels like.

And she taught me to love a country that would forever become part of my heart.

The Morning Everything Changed

Like millions of other people around the world, our lives were suddenly interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. When I left Thailand, neither of us imagined it would be for so long. We believed the travel restrictions would soon end and that we would be together again. Instead, borders closed, flights were cancelled, and returning became impossible. Distance never changed what we felt for each other.

We spoke every day, sharing our lives through messages and video calls, always believing that one day we would finally be together again.

Then came a morning that seemed no different from any other. My phone lit up with a familiar message.

“Good morning ❤️“

I smiled when I read it. There was nothing unusual about those two words. Nothing to suggest they would become the last message I would ever receive from her. Later that day, I learned that she had passed away peacefully in her sleep.

Only afterwards did I learn that, just a few days earlier, she had been diagnosed with an illness that neither of us knew she had. She had spent a short time in hospital, returned home, and we both believed she was recovering. 

We never imagined that our goodbye had already happened. The hardest part wasn’t only losing her. It was knowing that the pandemic had taken away our chance to see each other one last time.

There was no final embrace. No chance to hold her hand. No goodbye. Only one simple message. For the second time in my life, I found myself starting over. The first time, I had lost my marriage.

This time, I had lost the love of my life. For a long time, I questioned everything.

Why had life given me a second chance to love, only to take it away again? I never found an answer. But I did discover something she had left behind.

She had taught me what One True Love truly means. Not because our story lasted forever. But because her love changed me forever.

Deep in my heart, I believe she wanted her final words to be for me.

After sending that simple message—“Good morning ❤️“—she peacefully fell asleep forever.

I cannot prove it. But it has always been what my heart believes.

Learning to Love Again

Losing her changed me forever. For a long time, I couldn’t imagine opening my heart to anyone else. I focused on work, rebuilding my life one day at a time, accepting that some wounds never completely heal. People often say that time heals everything. I don’t believe it does.

Time doesn’t erase love or loss. It simply teaches us how to carry them.

Years passed, and without even realising it, I slowly became open to the possibility of meeting someone again. Not because I wanted to replace her. No one ever could. Love doesn’t work that way.

One day, almost without thinking, I decided to try online dating for the very first time. Looking back, I still don’t know exactly why. Perhaps I simply wasn’t ready to give up on love. Perhaps, deep inside, I still believed happiness was possible. Whatever the reason, I took that first step.

And once again, life surprised me. I met an incredible Thai woman who would become my soulmate. Our story was different. It wasn’t built on the past. It was built on hope, trust, and the future we wanted to create together.

Today, we live together in Austria, where we both work and continue building a happy life side by side.

She knows my story. She knows about the woman who changed my life before we met. She has never asked me to forget the past. Instead, she has accepted that every chapter of my life has made me the person I am today. That kind of understanding is a beautiful expression of love.

Looking back now, I realise something important.

Finding love again didn’t diminish the love I had lost. It simply reminded me that the heart has an extraordinary capacity to heal without forgetting.

Sometimes life gives us another chance.

The hardest part is finding the courage to believe in it.

Everything Finally Made Sense

Looking back today, I realise that every chapter of my life led me here. At the time, none of it made sense.

The end of my marriage.

A message sent to a stranger.

The woman who taught me the meaning of One True Love.

The heartbreak of losing her.

The courage to open my heart once again.

Only years later did I understand that every experience had changed me in ways I couldn’t see at the time.

For many years, I believed meaningful relationships couldn’t begin online.

Life proved me wrong.

Not once, but twice.

I wanted more people to see the Thailand I had been fortunate enough to experience and to understand that successful international relationships are built not only on attraction, but also on patience, communication, and a willingness to embrace another culture.

Another lesson my own journey taught me was that hope should always be balanced with common sense. Anyone looking for love deserves to feel safe, informed, and confident enough to recognise the difference between genuine intentions and dishonest ones.

Will MeetThaiLove help everyone find love?

Probably not.

No honest person could ever make that promise.

If there is one lesson my journey has taught me, it is this:
